Christmas 2008

I picked up a Honl flash grid about 3 weeks ago and like it a lot.

I even used it during Christmas this year.

This little white dog was a lot of fun, and would have been 3x this size if it's fur was fully grown out.

It's been a long time since I've been into NERF anything. I realized that these guns are not really meant to be used to shoot at people much less at point blank range. Think hard plastic meets strong spring-loaded space guns---welts not included.

I think we all wish that it could be Christmastime all the time.

Literal translation of Take on Me

One of the funniest videos that I've seen this week that doesn't involve Sarah Palin or Mark Wahlberg talking to Animals:

A literal translation of Take On Me (from Presurfer):

SimchaWhitehill.com: Ready for its Close-up

I mentioned yesterday that I designed a new web site for a friend: SimchaWhitehill.com. Well, now that the site has all it's clothes on and though there are some loose threads (see if you can find them), I think it was pretty successful.

Simcha's wordworking (The L'Asso Pizza Guide) will be showcased tonight at L'Asso where they are releasing the pizza guide. The pizza guide will be included as an insert in the New York region of The Onion. She also had a great article in New York magazine about the sexual consolation Lehman Brother employees were seeking on Craigslist following Lehman's demise.

More to come.

My New Design: SimchaWhitehill.com

So I just designed a site for a friend of mine Simcha Whitehill -- the site address is SimchaWhitehill.com: she's a amazing writer and was just recently given props at New Yorker Magazine . Full site launch will go out tonight with all her best stuff.

This is the design:

There are some best practices that I try to follow from Don't Make Me Think and others from the Nielson Norman group .

MySuit's Bad Imitation Apple Sauce

MySuit, a store located in Herald Square has apparently decided that hiring an ad agency to create a unique brand for them is too expensive. Instead, they have apparently hired a 17 year old with some Photoshop skills to rip off Apple's famous iPod silhouettes.

Here is a one view of their storefront ads from the Herald Square store:

It wouldn't be so bad if there wasn't an Apple iPod ad 10x larger on top of a building with a much better designed dancing figure:

Good job, MySuits. I didn't even have to leave the corner to prove my point.

My Grandfather

My grandfather, Sam H. Long, Jr. died on Friday night around 11:30pm but he left behind a family that adored him. He also left behind a wonderfully documented, organized story of his life through letters, memoirs, and photographs.

This image below is one from his chronicle while in service in Iwo Jima. Since this blog is more or less about photography, I'm trying to determine the type of camera used.... more to come.

A little Photoshop Magic

Before and After

This weekend's images gave me an excellent opportunity to really get back into Photoshop.

It started with this picture of Jeff.

Then I color balanced the image and darkened the tones.

After that, I thought it would look great with a cross-process color balance added to it. Cross-process refers to the process where you develop color-negative (print) film with the chemicals for slide film or vice-versa. It ultimately messes up the colors, but this is a good thing if it's what you want.

Then I showed it to everyone; it seemed to work. But that was a mistake, since the image really wasn't finished. Jeff and I had always envisioned this with him sitting in an old recliner with duct tape on it.

So I went back in to Photoshop. I found an image of the chair on Google images, then found the tape there as well. I search using REALLY LARGE FILE SIZE settings since the image of Jeff is 650 MB.

This is the chair that I picked from a furniture store web site. It's facing the wrong direction, but that's easily fixable.

I was surprised to find so few images of duct tape. This was the only one that seemed usable.

Anyway, off we go to fixing the image.

So I took the elements: the chair, the can, Jeff, the tape and began playing a little. First, clipping out Jeff from the background, then the can. Now they are separate movable elements. This is important, since when I put the chair behind Jeff, the can has to go somewhere.

Next, I need Jeff to look like he is sitting in it, so I warped the chair with the "warp" tool under transform to make it the right angle and perspective (this is a little harder than it looks since when you sit in a chair you make it tilt depending on how you are sitting). Luckily, Jeff was sitting at about the same eye level as if he were in the chair... lucky me.

Now comes the can, which is more difficult, because it is now sitting on a higher vertical plane. So I had to force the can to tilt downward, and then give it a shadow on Jeff's arm since it is now in the way of the light source.

Last but not least was the duct tape. Tape is weird, since it takes the shape of whatever it is being taped to. And with only one sample to go from this makes it harder (especially since I don't have a chair like the one that I took from Google Images), required turning and liquefying it until the tape met with the shape of the different sections of the chair.

Anyway, after about 5.5 hours of work, this is the result. A much larger image can be viewed at http://www.steveguyer.com/forjeff/high-res.jpg

Jeff's Photos

So my friend Jeff came over and we set up the studio downstairs. He had several ideas:

-Eat Chef Boyardee out of can with a wifebeater
-Wear a small suit and carry a Crystal Burger Crave Case (the suit was mine, the CRAVE CASE was Jeff's).

These images are evidence... enjoy.

Sabastiano in February

Just photos...

My roommate's friend Sebastiano is staying in our apartment until he can find an apartment in Craigslist. Since he was available, I used him as a subject to photograph. For all of those who care about settings:

1/100 @ 5.6 with Sigma 3.5-5.6/28-85

2 300w/s Paterson Interfits (third image only one light, snooted)

two Profoto diffusers on stands.
